The End of an Era! Sephora's Beauty Insider Community is Shutting Down

Sad, Sad News for our Long-Time Community Members

Well, it came as a shock to me, though some Community members said they had hunches. I had joined the Sephora Beauty Insider Community (BIC, then called Beauty Talk) more than 15 years ago. I was actually interested in starting to work for Sephora. I had my eyes on a corporate job in San Francisco because I wanted to be closer to my boyfriend (now husband). I lurked for a while, then started posting. Not too often, at first, but then I became a regular! It was a a supportive community of enthusiasts who asked questions, shared reviews, shared I-can't-even-guess-how-many photos of our hauls, skincare routines, selfies, pets, travel destinations, and more. Some of us made friendships that I believe and hope will endure beyond the end of this online community.

A Dedicated Community of Beauty Enthusiasts

The Beauty Insider Community was linked to Sephora's site, and showed 3,216,744 posts as of June 2, 2026, with more than 24,000 members online at 11:30 am! I've seen it show around 50,000 members active at one time in recent weeks. Exploring the members page shows that there were over 5,000,000 members with profiles on the site! Many were lurking and likely never posted, but many were actively posting, whether that was a one-time inquiry or exuberant beauty review of a new found product. And many were like me, beauty enthusiasts who had developed a family of like-minded friends, and worked to make the community a great place. We could look for posts that hadn't been answered and respond if we had an answer or tag another member if we knew they had the answer, or just share support. We tagged spam routinely and appreciated the Sephora staff who were responsible for the Community, acting as Moderators and Admins. We got to know some of the Beauty Directors, even meeting them in person at SEPHORiA and continuing to support their journeys inside and outside of Sephora over the years.

Hall of Famers!

My profile shows I was a member since 2013, I made over 13,000 comments and earned over 60,000 heart reactions from other members. This isn't even the most prolific, some of my dear friends have over 50,000 comments and more than 200,000 hearts! Amazing! When the forum transitioned from BeautyTalk (BT) in 2017, we were invited to a launch party in Hollywood to celebrate the new Beauty Insider Community. Perhaps I'll have to do a blog post in the future about that event, where I got to meet a bunch of my online besties in person for the first time! Since our status' would be resetting to zero on the new Community, they sent all of us with the top-tier Hall of Fame status some super-cute BT swag and a custom Bite Beauty lipstick called "Hall of Famer" in hot pink - which perfectly matched the custom avatar one of our site members created for us for the new site.

Anyway, you can see why we feel a deep sense of sadness at this Community going away. While I know the feelings and reactions are mixed, it's easy to understand that the love, support and loyalty we have shown to Sephora is not likely to continue. I still think they do a lot of things well and I am grateful that the Community existed and for the friendships and knowledge I've gained, but I'm a little sad to say that Sephora is not likely to be the default for me moving forward.

I was a Sephora Beauty Community Ambassador 2024-2025

In 2024, I was absolutely thrilled to be invited by the Sephora mods, after nomination by fellow Community members, to become a Beauty Insider Community Ambassador! While we got some lovely gratis and cute merch, along with tickets to attend SEPHORiA!!, the main reward was to be recognized for the value provided to the Community and be recognized in that way. It was disappointing when they ended the Ambassador program. I was further disappointed in Sephora's release of SEPHORiA tickets in 2026. It was a launch with no notice while I was on a 24-hour international travel itinerary with limited connection, and therefore missed the entire ticket launch and missed SEPHORiA entirely. I had been able to purchase tickets in every prior year as a Rouge-tier Beauty Insider. First-world problems, I know, but it was extremely disappointing to miss this event, after attending in prior years, even through literal natural disasters in 2024 and 2025! You can read a bit more about my past SEPHORiA events in this blog post. I'm nostalgic just looking at those pictures again, and realize I need to update from 2025 in Atlanta!

Ironically, my status finally ranked up from Boss V to ICON after the announcement on Sephora's site.

Makeup Challenge of the Week and Other Threads

During the pandemic, I needed some makeup inspiration and of course, turned to BIC! I started a makeup challenge of the week that ran from 2021 through 2024, with over 12,000 posts/replies, over 45,000 hearts given, and nearly 1.5 million views!

Forum thread titled Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023/2024, with challenge text, stats sidebar, and makeup photo thumbnails.

I also started a thread to celebrate and share the love about some brands I really, love, including Danessa Myricks Beauty, Dyson Beauty, and Dolly Beauty, Dolly Parton's new-ish line (which I also blogged about)!

A Declining User Experience

Sadly, the Community started having serious login issues a few years ago, which seriously impacted users' ability to access the site. There were issues and a total block for many of us on mobile, tablet, and desktop. There were issues with leaving reviews and answering Q&A on the Sephora site, which was frustrating for us Community members who are genuinely super knowledgeable about the products and are not paid by Sephora, but want to help and share our love of beauty. At the time the Community was closing, I still had to follow a process of going to Sephora's main website, which usually auto-logged in; then log out; then sign back in again; then go to Community to be logged in there. Then, if I forgot and clicked a link to the main site, I would have to repeat that process again to get back into the Community. Of course, all of us had periods of more activity, more life responsibilities that pulled us out of the chat for a while, but overall, it was a place you could always come back to, be welcomed, and find some familiar faces and the very latest on all things beauty - the latest launches, the best promo codes, the best sales and value, ask for or share swatches from a trip to Ulta or Sephora, or just to share random thoughts and pet pictures!

Did AI Lead to the Community's Demise?

I understand that Sephora is a big business that runs for profit, and I imagine they conducted SOME type of calculation on the finances of running the Community against profitability. While the Community didn't allow users to post outside links, it was always a unique and lauded feature that they DID allow discussion forums about other brands, even competitors like Ulta and other beauty retailers. Ultimately, I'm sure whatever calculation they did conduct missed some EXTREME volume of purchases that came from the Community members inspiring and influencing others with disposable income and a passion for beauty on a frequent basis.

The easy link, tagging, and connection between the Community and the Sephora shopping website had us adding to cart when another member raved about a new release or an old favorite, and had us sharing our honest reviews on the product pages, or inspired us to make a purchase when a good promo code was available. I'm guessing that Sephora has used that content to train it's AI tools, I see that Sephora launched it's own app inside of ChatGPT in March 2026. They also have an AI Beauty Chat, but it's not overwhelming to me after a few inquiries. I'm assuming they have used the information gathered from more than 15 years of authentic beauty conversations on BIC to train the AI, but I haven't read the disclosures in detail to see if it's disclosed specifically. I would not trade the information and reviews from real people who have used and experienced the product as purchasers over an AI generated summary. While I appreciate opinions from some beauty influencers whom I trust, I will always place a higher value on a product review from a verified purchase vs. one that is incentivized (i.e. free product or paid promotion).

On the Beauty Insider Community Closing

The site will be shutting down ALL NEW POSTING, commenting or communicating on June 3rd. No DMs to friends! Then, the site will remain in place and presumably, searchable, where users can screen shot content, etc. On August 3rd, the site will be shuttered entirely, with no remaining access.

On another note, I want to genuinely thank the BT/BIC staff team who helped build such an amazing and inclusive community and resource for all of us through life's ups and downs. Sources tell me the BIC staffers are not being let go, they are incorporated into other operations. I sure hope that's true! And thanks to all my beauty friends! I hope we can stay connected now and in the future!
